Logitech makes some big claims with their Z-5 speakers, and I’d have to say they’re largely true. These speakers really do carry throughout the room, and the audio separation is better than average. But these speakers are not for everyone. Comparing them with studio monitors, the Z-5s are very warm. They remind me most of the iPod Hi-Fi, but with much less bass. This is either a good thing or a bad thing, depending on personal taste. The Z-5s do have major caveats, however. Its lack of a headphone jack is unforgiveable, since it disables your sound card. It’s also surprising that there are no volume or bass controls, especially given the price. All in all, I’d say these speakers will satisfy the majority of people out there. For the rest, I’d suggest a full 2.1 setup like the Logitech Z-2300.
I love Logitech devices and have experienced many over the recent years. This version (Z-5 Omnidirectional) sounds fairly similar to the Audiohub Notebook speakers and they are approximately the same price. The Audiohub speakers are one unit and can be packed easily when moving about or traveling. The bass is better on the Audiohub. The Z-5 speakers have an extra speaker in the rear, so you can experience a more `ambient’ multi-directional sound. This sounds good, but there is no adjustment for bass or tone.
The system I currently have on my desktop (which is transferable to my laptop) is the Logitech X-140, which not only sounds better (it has a treble/midrange speaker and a bass speaker in each tower), but you can control the tone (treble and bass). Here’s the big hit – it only costs about $30 as opposed to the others which are around $80. Granted, the look of the Z-5 Omnidirectional is more sleek and attractive and the Audiohub Notebook is also compact and attractive, but for sound, and price, the Logitech X-140 is still the best deal and is more adjustable for your surroundings.
As I said, Logitech makes great computer speakers, but I think their first one, the X-140 is still by far the better bargain and sound. They are heavier and I suspect have a stronger magnet. Plus the headphone and microphone access is right in the front. The X-140 is slanted and not as sleek, but for sound, tonal adjustment and especially price, I’m sticking with my Logitech X-140 (until they really break new ground).
In addition, Logitech has added a small remote (1″ X 3″) that controls the On/Off, volume, sound source (iTunes/computer) and Play/Advance, but its gimmicky and I could see easily losing it (not that you HAVE to have it).
First of all I am a fan of Logitech products because they are usually the latest technology and they are also built well.
These speakers are poorly designed. The biggest problem with them is that nobody (including Logitech) will say in their description what they do. The speakers come with a remote control which doesn’t work just like that. I went and bought batteries thinking that they don’t work because the battery is dead. Guess what, the remote works only in the supported applications which are: Windows Media Player, iTunes, Winamp and Real Player. I am not talking about skipping through tracks in any player out there, I just want to be able to turn the volume up and down from the remote. I would even give that up if the speakers had a volume adjustment knob. Bottom line, you cannot control the speakers from the remote if you use anything else besides the 4 players mentioned above. The only way is to adjust it from the computer and that might not be possible always.
To me, these speakers are useless. They should make us aware somewhere in the description or even in the user manual.
I would give it 1 star but the sound is decent for what I need which is audio books.
these speakers are for my laptop to watch netflix online late at nite in my bedroom.
thats the only reason i bought them.
the speakers in my laptop are a drag.
i wanted something to plug in that gave me better sound for that situation.
i can go in my front room and fire up the denon, the hot rod sony tv,
and all my cool vintage speakers if i want the cops to come over.
i had my reason for getting the Z-5’s
and im glad i did.
time and a place for everything.
I wanted a descent set of speakers for my PC. After searching, I decided on these speakers. They are a very good product and I am pleased with the quality.
