4GB Kanguru Micro MP3

I’m just returning this product. The battery dies in about 2 hrs. Buttons work only occasionally after pressing many times. When you pause it, it never turns off. When you turn it off, it doesn’t start where it stopped. Very cheap plastic. File system is a complete mess. It’s supposed to work without drivers on Windows XP and Vista. I was able to copy files on (only after formatting the device) but now I can’t erase them. Keep getting a device write protected error that I can’t get rid of. I can’t format it or delete anything now. What a horrible product!
This is the most rugged mp3 player I’ve found. I bought one several years ago for my wife (when they maxed out at 512 MB). She likes to listen to it when working in the garden and around the house. She has dropped it on the concrete, run it over with the wheel barrow, left it out in the rain, left it in the car overnight at -30C, has covered it in various chemicals from paint to cleaners, and generally keeps it smashed into a bag which she flings around everywhere. On top of that, I’ve used it in the work shop and have had it so clogged with saw dust, oil, and grease that I couldn’t hear well through the ear buds. AND THAT LITTLE PLAYER KEPT RIGHT ON WORKING LIKE IT WAS BRAND NEW!
She actually cried the day she lost it, so I’m replacing it with this newer 4GB model. I have this exact model (I bought it last year because my wife’s mp3 player was so durable that I wanted a Kanguru also).
When it comes to durability, I haven’t found an inexpensive mp3 player to match the Kanguru. I only have three issues. 1) for some reason, this Kanguru model doesn’t like talking to my older IBM Thinkpad R31 running Windows XP Pro (my wife’s older model worked perfectly). However, it does work perfectly fine on my Acer Aspire 9400 running Windows XP Home. It may just be an outdated driver; I just haven’t had the time to troubleshoot this problem yet. 2) the earbuds which come with the Kanguru are awful. They are the large hard plastic type, which are supposed to sit in the ear, but just outside the ear canal. They never stay in place, they are uncomfortable, and the sound quality isn’t as good. If you get this player, I highly recommend also purchasing a set of good quality ear buds which have the multiple interchangeable tips which fit snugly into the ear canal. 3) this model Kanguru doesn’t come with a case, unlike my wife’s old 512MB model which had a leather case. The lack of case hasn’t been a problem for me over the past year, but my wife liked the case, because she could clip it onto her belt.
Despite these three issues, I think the ruggedness and durability of the Kanguru mp3 player makes up for these shortfalls – and I give it 5 out of 5. From my experience, if you buy a Kanguru, you won’t have to buy another one for a very long time, unless you want to upgrade to a larger size.
Previous to buying this product I had read a few bad reviews about it. I think that people forgot what it was they were buying when they wrote thier reviews. When comparing apples and oranges, “This is one tasty orange.” When comparing it to other MP3 players in it’s class, this one has functions and features that anyone looking for a mini MP3 player would be happy to have, without the cost of the other name brand gotta have, do it all MP3’s. Digital recording, FM tuner, plus 4GB capacity. And YES, contrary to what others have written, Mine is a full 4GB. It also comes with an USB extention cable for your convenience.
I have very much enjoyed using this MP3 player. I have used it for some six months now and I have been very happy with it. Key features: good sound quality, FM tuner, works with MP3 or WMA files, uses regular AAA batteries (rechargeable batteries work well), 4GB capacity, no special software needed to transfer files (Windows file explorer or the like is all you need), and it will return to where you left off in a music or audio file after shutting down or switching to the radio (this is a great convenience if, like me, you listen to a lot of books and other audio such as podcasts).
To put this review in perspective – i’ve owned about a dozen of these ‘penknife’ style flash drive MP3 players, including a 1G kanguru – and with the sole exception of a supposedly 4G no brand device i bought from HongKong i’ve been very happy with all of them.
This one i’m returning though, – it only plays about 1 in 50 of the songs loaded and then only mp3’s no WMA at all. I was going to send it back on an RMA for replacement, but then i noticed the display was still showing tracks i’d deleted prior to my intended return of the unit.
This is the same symptom i’d seen with the other 4G unit, which means that the flash memory itself is suspect. (possibly 2G formatted to 4G?)
So i’m returning it as defective for refund. Caveat Emptor? Good Luck All!
