Garmin iQue M5 Integrated Pocket PC and GPS

This may be a fine Pocket PC but if you are looking for a GPS find a different solution.
I purchased a Jeep with a GPS installed in it. I put the GPS CD in the CD player and I had working maps in seconds, was able, zoom, pan and plot routes as soon as it was turned on. It never pauses to find it’s current location. It has the location instantly.
This GPS does not have the map software installed. You have to install it and after installing you have to type in a 25 character code to unlock the maps. Why are they protecting maps? I can get all the free maps I want at Yahoo or Mapquest. Stop wasting consumer time and energy with dumb codes to protect nothing.
After I got the maps in, the thing just sits on my desk telling me it is acquiring satellites and never tells me where I am, never shows a map. This is the most useless item I have ever seen. How in the world do you sell a $450.00 GPS system that has no maps included, and has a GPS that does not work.
Stay away from this item unless you like jerking around for a week with poorly written software.
I use it at work evey day and let my help us it and we all love it. Very easy to use in one car or many cars. Very easy to use.
Despite what the technical details on this page say, you need a DVD drive, not a CD-ROM drive, to load the software. It does say DVD drive under system requirements on the box, but that’s after I bought it online and waited a week to receive it. I spent about an hour setting up the parts, charging the battery and then popping the disc into the CD-RW drive on my 2 year old Dell. Nothing! My Dell has a CD-ROM, but can’t read DVDs.
The instructions are not clear as to how often you need the disc. I’ll call garmin customer service on Monday. Maybe I can borrow a neighbor’s PC and load the maps and software if its a 1x thing. Otherwise I’ll have to return it.
Very disappointing! BTW, the costco.com site also does not mention the system requirements for a DVD drive on your PC to load the maps and software to the M5. I think Garmin should highlight this requirement so their resellers like Amazon and Costco don’t waste their customers time ordering something that’s incompatible with a 2 year old pc and now has to be returned. Very disappointing.
Very happy with all features as advertised.
Only gripe: The calendar is way too basic to be useful, there is no battery meter without going through 3menus, and main page appointments and tasks is very basic and not flexible. These issues are common to all Windows mobile (Pocket PC) products, and free or cheap software is available to fix these problems.
the only problem i see with this is the few memory, so it sometimes needs to be reset
