  1. I purchased this Seagate Black Armor 1 TB Back UP storage drive because it was rated Business Grade and had good web reviews. It cost more than other 1TB drives from Seagate and most others.

It failed in less than two weeks. Seagate Tech support (since it was within the 30day limit) was good on the phone and diagnosed it. They had me also test it on another computer which immediately said I had connected a defective USB drive.

So the Tech Support wizard gave me a case number and sent me to Warrantee Returns.

Another frustration in time wasting. Finally I got a person, since the web return pages dissavowed my serial number. We finally got the RA number and shipping after I promised not to use their devices for Nuclear or Terrorism.

I will pay to ship it back and they will send me a replacement. Probably another refurbished short lived piece of frustration.

I have many Seagate and Maxtor drives. Maybe I will seek another supplier.

Avoid them if you can but it is hard to ignore the giant.

But eventually General Motors was ignored and Chrysler who?

  2. I bought this thing to safely archive business record away but don’t want to use any software because it may not work 5 years from now. Bad news, this drive will only encrypt what you backup using the supplied software and encrypt nothing if you just copy files directly to the drive.

This is an abuse of the BlackArmor name for the line of product. The older models do encrypt everything.

  3. The Seagate BlackArmor WS 110 has already completely backed up my system and restored it to the exact way it was last saved. Restored six partitions on three hard drives and the only problem was their back-up boot-disk (which they included the means to make from their software) — it did not allow use of a mouse to go through the selection screens and required use of the tab, space-bar, arrow keys and enter, but I managed to work my way through.

It is quiet, gets slightly warm after eight hours and is a little slow, but I’ll trade that for an exact duplicate of my system without having to use any discs, re-enter the operating system, data or programs.

Should have waited a week for the price to go down. Good product, great service from Amazon.

  4. This drive is NOT like the 160gb and 320 gb Seagate Black Armor drives! It is a backup only drive that you HAVE to use with the included Acronis True Image/Seagate BlackArmor Backup software. You CANNOT use this as a simple (hardware) encrypted storage drive.

The manufacturer lies (by omission and association) by calling this a “BlackArmor” drive. The research I did BEFORE buying this drive implied you could use it for encrypted storage (like the earlier BlackArmor drives), but you cannot.

I have RETURNED mine and will wait for the Marketing MORONS at Seagate to properly brand and put out a REAL BlackArmor 1TB+ Hardware-based, government-grade (256-bit+) encrypted hard drive.
